Hepa Air Purifiers

HEPA is not a brand name of any product, but a technology used in the manufacturing of home cleaning products. It stands for High Efficiency Particulate Arrestor (HEPA). This technology is used in the manufacturing of air purifiers, air cleaners and vacuum cleaners. These filters are 99.97% effective in making the air pure and they filter airborne particles as minute as 0.3 microns.

They are effective in removing and filtering the smallest particles like smoke, animal dander, dust, bacteria and viruses. It is recommended that people suffering from breathing problems, chemical sensitivity or allergies use air purifiers based on the HEPA technology. The basic function of these cleaners is to purify the air by filtering the toxic particles through the HEPA air filter and thereby releasing fresh and pure air for breathing. The more often the air passes through the HEPA filter the more pure it becomes.

HEPA technology is especially recommended for households that have pregnant women, small children, babies and elderly people , who are most sensitive to unhygienic or polluted air. A HEPA air cleaner will effectively clean the air in the room in which it is located and not other areas/ rooms of the house or office. For example, if you have fitted a HEPA technology air purifier in your bedroom, it will clean the area of the bedroom but not any other rooms. Hepa air purifiers are unable to purify air around corners and on the other side of walls.

HEPA air filters are suitable for home offices, bedrooms and living rooms. Established companies like EZ Air or Austin Air manufacture their products using HEPA technology. Machines built with this technology normally provide fifteen exchanges of air every hour in a standard size room or bedroom and around eight air exchanges every hour in an area measuring 1000 sq. ft. Low quality air purifiers with HEPA technology will provide not more than two to four air exchanges per hour in a standard sized bedroom /room. The lower quality brands of air purifiers are not effective in large sized bedrooms or other large rooms and will not make any difference in the quality of the air.

Some HEPA technology air purifiers are available with the EGF (Enhanced Germ Filtration) system or ultra violet purification. These machines are medically graded, are equipped with advanced technologies and are effective in destroying impurities like pet dander, pollen, viruses and any other impurities that might trigger breathing disorders, at a more efficient, faster rate.

The filters at the higher-end range of these purifiers contain Zeolite and other activated blends that work effectively in absorbing the chemicals and the gases released in offices or in homes. The filters in the lower-end range of these purifiers, which are built with HEPA technology, are covered with carbon dust, have a very short period of life/ usage and are not effective for cleaning and purifying the air.

It is recommended that you be very cautious when purchasing the products/ purifiers based on HEPA technologies. Be sure to make an informed choice.
